Some days start before the sun. This was one of them. The lake was glassy when I pulled in, the kind of still that only happens before the wind wakes up. The mountains around me were still holding onto the night, their reflections stretched clean across the water. I took a minute before rigging up—coffee in hand, listening. No motors. No voices. Just loons calling somewhere down the shoreline. By mid-morning, the light had softened and the first signs of life started to show.
